Isaac Conroe, an Army veteran from the Civil War era, founded Conroe as a town in 1881 by opening a lumber mill near the International Great Northern Railroad tracks near Conroe. This event officially marked its founding and quickly led to its rapid growth – by 1930, Conroe boasted more millionaires per capita than any other town in Texas!

Petroleum was discovered near Crighton and instantly made the town one of the richest in Ohio. Schools, streets and paving were improved, as was Crighton Theatre built with new seats added for performances at this theater. Thanks to its booming economy, county leaders hired a full time librarian and set up public library system as well.
